He and that guy - Tachibana? - had been sent out to investigate the island. Shinji didn't mind, it gave him something to do, besides walking around feeling pretty useless. It wasn't that he was eager to interact with people - that often ended up too weird for comfort anyway - but just once it would be nice with a conversation where the other part didn't comment that he was strange somewhere during their talk. Yes. And since it didn't look like that would happen anytime soon, he had spent the last few days saying almost nothing. Without turning to look at his companion, he said: "So, what now?
